Wondering how you can stay fit when traveling? When exercising on a regular basis is part of your normal routine, you want to make sure that you don’t get off track when traveling to a particular destination. Whether you rarely travel or travel often, if you’re someone who wants or needs to stay fit for health reasons, understanding how you can stay fit when traveling is a great idea!

Staying Fit When You Travel
The first thing to understand is that everyone has their own routine. This means that you should take the information below and integrate it into your own daily routine. For example, while walking is listed below, you can also go for a run, take a hike, or participate in even more daring adventures, like rock climbing.

Eat a Healthy Breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast is important, as the food choices you choose to eat during your first meal of the day is going to give you the energy you need to feel good throughout the day. Since the types of foods you choose to eat at breakfast are also going to get your metabolism going, be sure to make wise and healthy choices. Examples include yogurt, scrambled eggs, and berries.

Eat Healthy Snacks Between Meals. Eating a healthy snack in between meals is a great way to keep your metabolism going. As soon as you start feeling hunger pains, it means that your body is in need of additional nutrition, so don’t ignore these pains! Understand that snacks don’t have to be bought and instead can be homemade, which means you know exactly what’s in them. Examples of healthy snacks include granola bars, dried fruit, and hard-boiled eggs.

Drink Plenty of Water. Drinking plenty of water helps to regulate your body’s temperature, lubricates all of your body’s joints so they can move and function properly, and helps to transport essential nutrients throughout your body in order to give you the energy you need to get through the day. While current recommendations state you should drink about half a gallon of water a day, asking your PCP for their advice on how much you should drink is recommended.

Walk. When walking is a choice, take it! Anytime there is an opportunity to walk vs. driving or taking a cab, you should take the opportunity. Walking is not only one of the easiest ways for you to stay fit when traveling, just imagine what you can do with the extra time it takes to walk to your destination, i.e. enjoy the company of others, discuss your next day itinerary, enjoy the views along the way.

Practice Yoga. Yoga is good for your mind, body, and soul, making practicing yoga when traveling a great idea for staying fit. No matter whether you watch a DVD, use an app, or take a local yoga class, yoga is one of best ways you can stay fit when traveling!

Wondering what the differences are between passport books and passport cards? The United States State Department offers two different types of passports – the traditional passport books that so many people are familiar with, and passport cards. So which one should you get? For the most part, it depends on your traveling needs, and how much you want to spend on necessary travel documents.

Passports Books

Travelers can use Passport Books to internationally travel by air, see, and/or land. This type of U.S. Passport meets all of the REAL ID fulfillments required by Homeland Security, and therefore can be used by those who are traveling by domestic air travel. Those who are under the age of 16 will receive a Passport Book that’s valid for 5 years, and Passport Books given to those who are over the age of 16 will be valid for a period of 10 years.

The Passport Book is the only United States approved document that allows for international air travel. First time costs for an adult Passport Book is $145, which will cost $110 to renew. First time costs for a child’s Passport Book is $115, which will cost $80 to renew.

Passport Cards

Travelers can use Passport Cards to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean, which includes both land border crossing and sea ports of entry. While a Passport Card cannot be used to travel internationally by air, it is REAL ID compliant and therefore can be used to travel domestically by air. Those who are under the age of 16 will receive a Passport Card that’s valid for 5 years, and Passport Cards given to those who are over the age of 16 will be valid for a period of 10 years.

The reason why Passport Cards cannot be used to fly internationally is because it was specifically designed for both the northern and southern United States border community residents who crossed the border often by land. First time costs for an adult Passport Card is $65, which will cost $30 to renew. First time costs for a child’s Passport Card is $50, which will cost $15 to renew.

Good to Know

Travelers can apply for a Passport Book and a Passport Card at the same time. They must first apply in person, and then they must meet eligibility requirements in order to renew their book or card by mail. Applications are processed within a six week timeframe, and expedited services are available for those who need their documents sooner.
